What Is Consciousness? Human Ideas, Scientific Theories, and Open Possibilities

Consciousness is the fact that there is something it feels like to be you: to see colour, feel pain, remember a song, notice a thought, or experience the world from a particular point of view. It is also the ability to be awake, aware, and sometimes aware that you are aware. The word sounds singular, but it may describe several related capacities rather than one simple thing.

What are we trying to explain?

A useful starting point is to separate two questions. The first is what consciousness does: it helps an organism integrate information, respond flexibly, learn, plan, communicate, and report what it is experiencing. The second is why any of this is accompanied by experience—why seeing red or feeling grief is not merely information processing with nobody home.

Researchers often distinguish the level of consciousness, such as wakefulness or deep sleep, from its contents, such as a thought, image, sensation, or memory. This distinction matters: arousal may make experience possible, while different patterns of brain activity shape what the experience contains.

What do humans think consciousness is?

Human ideas about consciousness have always been shaped by both observation and culture. In ordinary life, we often treat consciousness as a private inner self—a mind that looks out through the senses, makes choices, and carries a continuous identity through time. Psychology adds layers such as attention, memory, emotion, self-awareness, imagination, and the ability to reflect on one’s own mental states.

These positions overlap in places, and none should be presented as settled fact. A compelling possibility is not the same as a demonstrated explanation.

Leading scientific theories

Contemporary consciousness science compares theories by asking what kind of brain activity accompanies experience and what predictions each theory makes.

Global workspace theories

Global workspace theories propose that information becomes conscious when it is made broadly available to many systems—such as memory, decision-making, language, attention, and action. A perception may begin as local, unconscious processing; when it is amplified and globally “broadcast,” it becomes available for flexible thought and report. This helps explain why we can consciously use some information while other information remains outside awareness.

Integrated information theory

Integrated information theory starts from features of experience: it is unified, differentiated, and structured. It proposes that consciousness corresponds to the way a system’s causal activity is both integrated and rich in information. The theory has generated mathematical ideas and testable proposals, but its interpretation and empirical status remain actively debated.

Recurrent processing and predictive processing

Recurrent processing theories emphasise feedback loops: signals do not simply travel once from the senses to higher brain areas; activity flows back and forth through networks. Predictive-processing approaches describe the brain as continually generating models of the world and updating them when incoming signals differ from expectations. On these views, conscious perception may be an actively constructed best interpretation rather than a camera-like copy of reality.

Higher-order theories

Higher-order theories suggest that a mental state becomes conscious when the system represents itself as being in that state—for example, not only processing a colour, but registering that “I am seeing this colour.” Critics question whether a further representation is necessary and whether it explains the felt quality of experience, but the theory highlights the connection between consciousness and self-monitoring.

These theories are not all mutually exclusive. A mature explanation may combine useful parts of several frameworks. Recent direct comparisons have challenged important predictions of both global neuronal workspace and integrated information theories, which is a reminder that the field is still testing its leading ideas rather than declaring a winner.

Possible explanations beyond the current consensus

There are several possibilities still open:

What can we responsibly say?

Brain damage, anaesthesia, sleep, drugs, stimulation, and changes in attention can reliably alter consciousness. This strongly links human consciousness to biological processes, especially coordinated activity across brain systems. But correlation is not yet a complete explanation. Finding the neural conditions associated with an experience does not by itself explain why those conditions feel like anything from the inside.

Perception is also not simply a hallucination in the sense of being arbitrary or unreal. Experience is constructed by the brain, but it is constrained by sensory input, the body, the environment, and the consequences of action. Our interpretations can be mistaken while the experience itself remains real as an experience.

A mystery that can be investigated

Consciousness sits at the meeting point of neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, computer science, medicine, and human meaning. The strongest position today is neither “we already know” nor “nothing can be known.” We have increasingly precise ways to study wakefulness, conscious contents, brain networks, and behaviour. We do not yet have a universally accepted account of why subjective experience exists at all.

That gap is not a reason to fill it with certainty. It is an invitation to keep the questions separate: What is happening in the brain? What is consciousness like from the first-person view? What does a theory predict? What is a metaphysical possibility? And what evidence would change our minds?
